MVP development cost calculator

Price the smallest build that actually tests your assumption.

An MVP is a bet, and the cost of that bet should be small enough to lose quickly. This calculator scopes the minimum credible version; you're pricing a test of your assumption, not a smaller version of the full product.

Calculators give a range. A scoping call gives a fixed scope, timeline and budget.

Who should use this tool

  • Founders testing a market assumption
  • Non-technical executives sizing a first build
  • Boards reviewing early-stage spend
  • Accelerator programme leads

Data sources

  • Regional blended software rates
  • First-year infrastructure baselines

How we calculate this

Calendar weeks × 40 hours × team size × blended regional rate, adjusted for the effort a multi-tenant SaaS or mobile target adds, plus a first-year infrastructure allowance. Range is ±15%; MVPs are harder to pin down because scope is deliberately fuzzy.

Factors that move the number

The most common failure is building the roadmap instead of the test. Fix the one metric that decides the business and cut everything that does not move it.

Doubling the team does not halve the calendar. Communication cost grows faster than parallelism on a small product, which is why a three-person team usually beats six on an MVP.

Plan for one rebuild. An MVP proves the assumption; the production system is usually a separate investment once it does.
